Forest Fire Protection Using Embedded System & IoT

As we all know the temperature fluctuations in the past few years adversely affecting the existence of life on planet earth. The global warming is the scenario emerged due to the industrialization and forest destruction. The only solution for global warming is the protection of forest there by keeping the nature in balance. Governments from all over the world joined their hands to fight the common enemy “De-forestation”. Protection of the forest is the duty of every living soul. Even though we have so many movements, ventures and activities to protect the forest there are some natural calamities which causes forest destruction, like forest fire. The frequency of the fire occurrence in forests elevated due to tremendous hike in the atmospheric temperature.

Technological advancements proved that the use of a well designed application specific device can detect the forest fire and prevent the further spreading of the fire. A perfectly designed “Forest Fire Protection using Embedded IoT System” can give protection to the forest and the wild life as well. The ideology of a Forest Fire Protection System is easy to understand and anyone having the basic knowledge in the embedded system can make one his own. The system itself has got a sensing arrangement to detect the current status of atmosphere in the forest and a regular update will be sending to the respective forest department offices. The sensing unit present inside the device gives the information about the chances of fire and presence of human in the restricted or reserved forest area using a wireless transmitter.

“Forest Fire Protection System” contains a sensor unit, transmitter unit and receiver unit. The temperature sensor inside the device gives the analog values with respect to the intensity of the heat in that area. Most commonly we use a wireless sensor network to cover the entire forest area. Which has identified as the most effective system than a traditional satellite based fire detection.

These analog values generated by the sensors will be processed by a micro controller based processing unit. The system also incorporates the flame sensors and smoke sensors to identify whether the fire has already happened or not. The processed output of the controller is transferred through a wireless transmitter such as a Wi-Fi module or GSM module. The location of fire occurrence can be identified using a GPS module. A mobile phone in the receiving center (Monitoring Location) receives this data. By analyzing the data the officers can easily respond to the fire in timing or call for the UAV (Unmanned Arial Vehicle) support to extinguish the fire.

The advantages of this system are, we can identify the forest fire more rapidly without the human effort. It can reduce the patrol of forest officers in the forest and can reduce the presents of humans in the forest. However there are some situations we need to find a solution for, such as, the system requires a vandal protection covering to provide protection from the rain, heat, animals, etc. and we have to make sure the transmitter has enough signal strength to transmit the data inside the forest.
